In honour of International Women's Day, I was invited to speak on a panel for F-Word, a student group at McGill University. Much of what I shared revolved around my career path - the struggles and the opportunities. The take away messages that I shared with these students included the following:
Design a path for yourself – be nimble
Seek and find strong mentors. These relationships are invaluable. search for role models who are generous with their time. Pay it forward. If and when you can assist others, you should
Take risks and dream big. Don’t let others tell you what you are capable of or let their views limit your potential. Don’t become discouraged. People may be critical of your choices – listen but don’t let it deter you. Recalibrate if you have it
Continuous learning and growth should be a part of your every day. Use setback as an opportunity for growth. Every disappointment has the potential to create even more happiness and success.
As leaders in healthcare, you have the ability to advise and share your path with others. Consider seeking opportunities to share your wisdom with others.
