Effective leadership in healthcare may be hard to define but during times of crisis, it can be easy to identify. As the pandemic continues to highlight the unknown, good leadership becomes even more important. Some failsafe strategies that healthcare leaders should think about include the following:
1. Take Care of You
Your leadership has never been on display more than now. Acknowledge how you are feeling and ensure you are maintaining the balance you need to manage your own stress.
2. Be Flexible and Adapt
Set priorities that can be clearly understood but be prepared to change these priorities if and when necessary. Always anchor your priorities on what is most important.
3. Be Authentic
These are unprecedented times. You might not have all of the answers, but your experience and former success enable you to problem solve. Don’t be afraid to say you don’t know and tap into your team and their expertise to develop a plan and a strategy. Role model behaviour that you want others to emulate and demonstrate compassion when making decisions.
4. Communicate
When communication doesn't exist, people will design their own answers. Create a plan for frequent and clear messaging to your organization about issues that impact them.
